Rhapsody in Blue | West Lakeview
As a Chicago interior designer specializing in residential design, Epic Interiors approached this West Lakeview kitchen renovation as a complete transformation, turning a dark, enclosed space into a light-filled, open hub for everyday living. The existing layout felt compartmentalized and limited both flow and functionality. The goal was to create a cohesive, modern environment that supports cooking, gathering, and connection, while reflecting the clients’ personal history and aesthetic.
The design began with a full reconfiguration of the floor plan. Walls, cabinetry, and an existing closet were removed to expand the kitchen footprint and allow for a more open, integrated layout. A large custom island now anchors the space, providing storage, seating, and a central place for daily activity. An appliance wall consolidates key functions, including double ovens, a wine cooler, and a built-in coffee station, creating both efficiency and visual clarity within the open plan.
A defining feature of the project is the custom floating ceiling above the island. Designed to accommodate ventilation without interrupting sightlines, it transforms a technical requirement into a sculptural architectural element. Warm wood detailing softens the modern lines, while a layered palette of deep blues, warm whites, and grounding neutrals brings a sense of calm and cohesion. The result is a space that feels fresh and contemporary while remaining inviting and livable.
Sustainability and personal history were central to the design approach. A custom dining table crafted from reclaimed wood anchors the eat-in area, while the clients’ original dining chairs, owned for over 40 years, were refinished and reupholstered to preserve their story. As with all of Epic’s residential design work in the Chicago area, this project reflects a purpose-driven approach, where thoughtful design choices support both function and meaning. The result is a kitchen that not only performs beautifully, but feels deeply connected to the lives lived within it.
