About Sal:
Salvador Dominguez is a Chicago-based artist whose work explores identity, labor, and cultural memory through inventive material practices rooted in his Mexican American heritage. Drawing from a working-class upbringing in Los Angeles and early experiences in Mexico, Dominguez reinterprets traditional craft techniques using accessible, everyday materials such as zip ties, PVC cord, pipe cleaners, and molded vinyl textiles, transforming them into intricately woven sculptures, vessels, and low-relief paintings. His process often references the labor of his family, including his father’s carpentry and his mother’s domestic craft, creating a visual language that bridges generational and cultural gaps while honoring often unseen forms of work. Through vibrant color, pattern, and tactile surfaces inspired by street vendors, household objects, and neighborhood textures, Dominguez creates work that feels both familiar and unexpected, inviting broader audiences into the conversation and challenging conventional boundaries between fine art and craft.
