Writer's Loft Renovation in South Loop Chicago
Built-in bookshelf with sweeping views
Some homes need a full reimagining. This one just needed the walls to get out of the way.
The South Loop condo came to Epic Interiors as a classic loft with good bones and an underused asset: a sweeping run of floor-to-ceiling windows that a dividing wall was blocking from the rest of the home. Removing that wall was the first move, and it changed everything. Light now travels freely through the space, and the window line opens onto an unobstructed view of the Chicago skyline, a backdrop that now anchors the entire main living area. The kitchen, living, and work areas read as one continuous, easy rhythm rather than three separate rooms competing for attention.
From there, the design leaned into material contrast. Custom cabinetry and a streamlined island anchor the kitchen, with a deep, watery-blue backsplash that adds depth without overwhelming the space. A floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelf became the room's architectural anchor, giving the loft's height something to do besides look impressive. In the primary bath and powder room, warm wood tones and layered textures keep things feeling tailored and lived-in rather than showroom-perfect.
The client, a writer with a developed eye of his own, wanted a home that supported both how he lived and how he thought. That meant a home office woven into the main living space instead of tucked away, and it meant an art program that carried just as much intention as the architecture.
That's where Epic Art came in. The art program spans six spaces throughout the loft: the entry, dining room, kitchen, bookshelves, primary bath, and powder room. Every piece was chosen for its specific spot, the light it would catch, the mood of the room it lived in, and how it spoke to the pieces placed elsewhere in the home. The through-line is a modernist sensibility with room for color and a little whimsy, most notably in the powder room, where personality gets to show up without breaking the home's considered framework.
It's a project that took several rounds to land exactly right, and that's precisely the point. When a client has real opinions about what they want to live with, the best result comes from treating the process as a genuine creative conversation, not a quick selection.
The result is a loft that feels composed and expressive in equal measure: distinctly urban, distinctly personal, and unmistakably his.
